Surveillance in Las Vegas is unique due to the size of the Las Vegas valley and the congestion on the Las Vegas strip. The rapid growth in the Las Vegas valley since 1995 left many areas without express roadways and consequently travel times to and from the outlying residential areas were above normal in terms of expected time to commute within the valley. The major freeways and expressways seem to be constantly “under construction”. The constant building and remodeling of casinos on the Las Vegas strip coupled with the high visitor counts makes travel on the “strip” a challenge. These factors make car to car surveillance extremely difficult and usually two investigators in separate vehicles are necessary to successfully complete moving vehicle surveillance projects.

Surveillance in the Las Vegas area hotels is also very challenging. With over 140,000 hotel rooms on the Las Vegas strip and an average visitor population of 250,000 the challenge of locating a particular person in one of the hotels and maintaining visual surveillance of that person is difficult on a good day. Many of the strip hotels have more than one tower with guest rooms and each tower has multiple guest elevators. Many of the strip hotels have more than ten different ways to commute between the guest rooms and the casino floor and restaurants. The hotels have multiple ingress and egress locations. The hotels take special effort to protect the identity and activities of their guests.

Surveillance in all of the Las Vegas area hotels requires special knowledge of the individual hotel configurations and policies. Las Vegas Detectives investigators constantly monitor all of the area hotels to insure that they are aware of any changes made that effect visitor movement.
